Reflecting on the Year: Is It Time to Sell Your Aircraft?

As the year draws to a close, many of us find ourselves reflecting on the past and contemplating future plans. This reflective period often leads to significant decisions, such as whether it’s time to sell your aircraft or invest in new opportunities like flight training or freeing up hangar space for a new aircraft purchase.

If you’re considering selling your aircraft, it’s crucial to partner with the right company to ensure you get the best value and have and easy transition and sale. Here are some key considerations to keep in mind when deciding who will help you sell your airplane.

  1. Commission Rates and Hidden Fees

Before choosing a partner to sell your aircraft, understand the commission fees involved. These fees will impact your bottom line and the value you receive after selling your plane. If one company’s fees are higher than another’s, inquire about the additional services they offer. You should expect comprehensive service, including extensive marketing reach that goes beyond your local market.

Transparency is key. Ensure all commission and fees are disclosed upfront to avoid surprises. The more transparent the process, the better your experience will be when selling your aircraft.

Airspace only charges a fee for success. The cost is percentage based. In most cases the fee includes full documentation of the aircraft, publishing in an omnichannel approach, working with buyers and running the auction through to the complete sale. An omnichannel approach just means that any and all complimentary marketing channels are used, the range is broad. A sellers aircraft when represented by Airspace will appear in many online aircraft classified platforms, SEO, social media (many channels) and on airspaceauctions.com

  1. Industry Expertise

Selecting an auction company with deep aviation industry expertise is vital. Many companies treat all consignments the same, which could mean your aircraft is marketed to the wrong audience. Choose a company with personnel who live and breathe aviation, ensuring accurate pricing estimations and effective marketing channels for your aircraft.

  1. Marketing Reach

Maximizing the value of your aircraft depends on reaching the widest possible audience. A brokerage may not use all potential venues to expose your aircraft to potential buyers. In an auction environment it is essential to market aggressively in order to find all possible interested bidders and then provide top tier customer service to get the bidders bidding. Look for a company with a robust marketing strategy that includes global, national, and local markets. Online bidding allows you to sell to buyers anywhere, anytime.

Ask prospective brokers about their marketing reach and strategies. Inquire about their website traffic, customer database size, social media following, and digital advertising tactics. Today’s marketing requires a presence on social media, web platforms, and more to attract competitive bidders and maximize your returns.

  1. I have a client that has a 1984 Mooney M20K Turbo, I am basically a friend that has been just helping him.

I am curious as to how your system works and perhaps it is a good option for him, he now has a medical issue and really wants to move the aircraft, although he is not interested in a fire sale.

    • Matt,
Our auctions are not fire sales. The aircraft we auction typically go within about 10% of market value. I’d love to help your friend out by gathering some information about the aircraft and creating a free market assessment for him. I have your email and will reach out with additional information. In the meantime, you can call 254-735-5030 with any questions. – Juleigh
